RESOURCES FOR PHIL101
Below are links to study helps and other resources to support you as you go through the ICC Philosophy 101 course. We’ll update this page with more resources as the course proceeds.
Links to readings
Lesson 1: No readings, just watch the introduction video and lecture
Lesson 2: Euthyphro (piety): Text | Audio (mp3) | Video (YouTube)
Lesson 3: Meno (virtue): Text | Audio (mp3) | Video (YouTube)
Audio and video formats are provided by Audiobooks Dimension
Use your favourite audio device to listen to readings. For Android phones, we recommend installing Smart Audiobook Player, which costs about NZ$3.50 to buy a permanent licence.
Ebooks
Amazon Kindle: Delphi Complete Works of Plato (Illustrated). This costs NZ$3.48 and includes useful introductory material for all of the dialogues. If you don't like Kindle, we can convert this to ePub format for you once you have purchased it, if that would be better for you – just show us evidence of purchase. Otherwise it is easy to read on an Amazon Kindle device, or in the free Kindle app which can be installed on your phone or PC.
Hardcopy books
PaperPlus: Plato: Five Dialogues (covers all the Dialogues needed for the course except for Republic)
Amazon: Plato: Five Dialogues (covers all the Dialogues needed for the course except for Republic)
Blackwells: Great Dialogues of Plato (but this one is missing Euthyphro)

FAQs
Do I need to have a group sorted before I register?
No. If you already have a group of friends, family, or colleagues who want to do this together, wonderful. Register as a group and you're away. But if you don't know anyone to study with, register individually and we'll match you with people in your area. The in-person discussions are a central part of what makes this work, and we want everyone to have a group regardless of how they sign up.
The ideal group size is five or six people, but there's no hard rule.
What if I miss a week?
It happens. Life is real. The course is self-paced within the week, so there's flexibility in when you do the lesson, early morning, late evening, during a commute if you're listening to the audio versions. If you fall a lesson behind, you can catch up. The rhythm only really matters around your monthly group discussion, which you'll want to be reasonably current for. But missing the odd week is not a reason to drop out.
How does the discussion guide work?
The St Thomas More Trust has prepared a discussion guide for each group session. It includes the reflection questions from Dr Cuddeback alongside additional prompts to help get the conversation going.
This means that nobody needs to arrive as the designated expert. Nobody needs a philosophy background. The guide is there so that when your group sits down together, ideally over a meal, there's something to anchor the conversation if you need it. Many groups won't need much prompting at all. Either way, you won't be left staring at each other across the table.
Watch this first:
Tomas has recorded a short walkthrough video explaining exactly what the programme is, why it’s important, how it works, and what you'll actually be doing week to week. It's the clearest single explanation of the course and the thinking behind it that we have, and if you've been curious but haven't quite committed yet, this is worth ten minutes of your time.

Why do I have to do multiple registrations?
In case it’s not clear, here’s why there’s more than one registration step:
1. We need you to register with the St Thomas More Trust so we know what small groups we have and so we can send everyone the additional study helps we have put together. There’s plenty of good stuff we want to share.
2. We need you to register with the Institute of Catholic Culture so you can create an account with them and get access to their content.
3. Once you have an ICC account we need you to register for the specific Philosophy 101 course that we will be following.
Next step, if you haven’t done this already
Registration is open now at http://stmtrust.org.nz/phil101. We're not having a hard cutoff on registrations, but we do want everyone set up and ready to go in the week of May 4th.
And in case it helps, Tomas has done a two minute video tutorial on how to actually register for the course on the Institute of Catholic Culture website: https://youtu.be/9KOWCBHs9Uc
